Philcon’s 90th Anniversary
This year marks Philcon’s 90th anniversary, and we think that’s something to celebrate!
Ninety years ago, nine intrepid SF fans got together in Philadelphia—some of them traveling from New York by train—to share their love of the genre. This makes Philcon the oldest science fiction convention In the US.
We’ve gotten bigger since then. Each year Philcon hosts hundreds of fans for a weekend of discovery, fun, and thought-provoking conversation in the areas of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Our many tracks reflect the growth of the field, too, from literary, movies & TV, animé and comics to cosplay (with our Masquerade), gaming, and filk.
Here’s how we plan to mark the occasion:
- Friday evening at 9 pm: A Happy 90th Party, with cake!
- Friday evening at 10 pm: Time Traveler’s Ball—looking forward and back, we’re inviting you to show up in costumes inspired by past and future. In sync with this year’s 1632 Minicon, dress up like it’s 1632, or 1936 (our founding year), or 2632! Costumes not required, but if you’ve got one, you’re also welcome to sign up for the Masquerade on Saturday evening at 8 pm.

- Brush up on your Convention history with FANAC and Con History, two organizations dedicated to telling the history of science fiction fandom. FANAC will bring their interactive photo ID project to Philcon—you can help fill in some gaps in the story!
